It’s easy to think of a time when you’ve seen Kevin Nealon. Whether you’re old enough to remember him in his “Hans and Franz” sketches on Saturday Night Live long long ago, or young enough to know him as Councilman Doug Wilson on the Showtime series Weeds, everyone has a favorite Kevin Nealon character.
Nealon got his start in stand-up comedy in the 1970s, and was picked up by SNL in 1987 when his friend Dana Carvey recommended him to producer Lorne Michaels. He remained at SNL for nine seasons, then moved on to a successful career in TV and movies.
Throughout his career, Nealon has had the chance to play people who never take themselves too seriously. His stand-up routine is very much like his characters: irreverent, upbeat and charming. His jokes touch on simple, light-hearted themes, such as his fear of chimpanzees (“They rip your jaw off so you can’t bite them, and then they go for your testicles, I guess so you can’t rape them.”) and being mistaken for a pot smoker, just because he plays one on TV (“I wonder if the guys from The Sopranos have people come up to them when they’re eating at a restaurant with a .38-caliber and ask if they’d like to go whack someone.”) Seeing Nealon perform up-close and in-person is a rare opportunity to be entertained by an icon of television and movies, and well-worth the trip to Ogden—and the frostbite you’re sure to get standing in line to get those coveted front-row tables.
