Artist Statement: "We are in some ways defined by the landscape around us. Surrounded by expanses of open, undeveloped land gives an implicit spatial and situational aspect to most of our other thoughts. And yet our verbalized thoughts about the landscape usually go little beyond notions of "pretty" or "ugly". Despite this poverty of expression, I think notions about the land often underlie many of our self-concepts, providing a ground for many aesthetic, political, moral and aspirational assumptions. "Land" and related notions of "empty space", "wilderness" and "development" shape much of what we think proper or possible. The landscape appears variously to us as a blank canvas, a field for action and exploitation, a reserve of resources and renewal, a counterpoise to hectic and complicated urban lives, but also as an empty quarter to put problems or people we don't know what else to do with. What makes a landscape visually interesting to me usually has to do with how an image, design or composition evokes a chain of visual associations and feelings that doesn’t often hang together in the neat, consistent and purposeful manner that more linear and verbal art forms do. In my work, I am trying to understand a visual language that doesn’t reduce to words in any particularly useful way, but yet evokes a train of associations and moods that transcend my subjective response to a particular view."
