Several local framing shops also feature original art on the walls—nothing beats fineart paintings and photographs to show off well-made frames. But it works also as a symbiotic relationship of sorts for artworks and artists, since frame shops have a built-in economic base that helps them remain somewhat immune from the vicissitudes of the local art market.

The two artists at Evergreen Framing Co. & Gallery this month provide vivid examples of what can fit inside a frame, as well as inspiring stories of lives informed by a love of color.

When Cassandria Parsons—born in Canton, China—was shown a tray of common objects on her first birthday, she chose a bamboo brush, which, according to custom, determined her life’s work. Jodi Steen worked in her father’s art gallery as a youth before taking up artistic study. Both artists create landscapes that call to mind the return of springtime and its engaging hues.

Jodi Steen/Cassandria Parsons @ Evergreen Framing Co. & Gallery, 3295 S. 2000 East, 801-467-8770, through March 13.
