We doubted that Saw 3D, the seventh and “final” chapter in the gruesome franchise, would be the last one, and our cynicism has paid off (again). Part eight, Jigsaw—now it’s named after the villain instead of his favorite weapon—has a new set of carefully curated victims trapped in a fiendish game that forces them to confess their sins or be sawn. The police say it must be a copycat—why, Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) has been dead 10 years now. Or has he? As always, it doesn't matter who the participants are, or what they did to deserve maybe-Jigsaw's condemnation. The dialogue they speak—shout, mostly—certainly was not anyone’s top concern. But the traps are clever, and screenwriters Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger (Piranha 3D) keep things peppy with short scenes hopping between the escape room and the investigators’ CSI-like efforts to find it (a thread that has its own surprises). Moreover, twin directors Michael and Peter Spierig (Predestination) deliver graphic, impressively detailed carnage without overdoing the torture, making this, on the whole, a respectable exploitation flick. As these things go.
