I read Bryan Woodman’s June 4 letter in City Weekly titled “Wear a Brimmed Hat.” What I find most interesting—and disturbing—about Woodman’s rant of ideological idiocy is that he seems to believe that it was the Barack Obama administration that created the Department of Homeland Security and implemented all of the lovely domestic surveillance measures that are currently in place.
It’s time for Woodman to take a little break from his fantasy world and come back to reality. DHS was created by the administration of George W. Bush in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The neoconservatives, not “socialist juggernauts,” were the ones who used fear and hatred to manipulate the American people into accepting the violations of personal freedom that came in the form of things like the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and the Patriot Act.
In traditional neocon fashion, Woodman resorts to name-calling and the blame game, trying in vain to push the expansion of government off on a president who has been in office for only half a year. What an interesting world it would be if President Obama had that kind of authority or the ability to influence policy and the direction of this nation so quickly. With any luck, we will find through the course of the Obama administration a break from the Brave New World that has been created over the past decade through the manipulation of fear and ignorance.
