Have Fun and Be Careful

After living away and now visiting for the holidays, I seem to have fresh eyes for Salt Lake City and I truly love it. This past Sunday was full of early-bird Christmas parties. Folks got tired of conflicting holiday-party schedules and moved their celebrations to the beginning of the month—the result being we attended three fiestas in one night; next weekend is booked solid, too, and the season’s just begun! It makes you wonder what fevered pitch Salt Lakers will need to maintain to fit it all in.

Also, there’s the question of survival. Drinking and driving is a hot topic any time of year, but is never more worrisome than right now. If you’re going to be driving this season, listen to all the safety slogans you’ve ever heard.

A few personal favorites are: “Arrive alive,” “Buckle up for safety” and “The streets are safe, it’s only the people that make them unsafe.”

Simply play it cool and watch out for the other guy. He may not be drinking but merely blinded by his cell phone, or perhaps she’s a mommy who’s preoccupied with a rumble of Christmas packages and unruly kids escaping from car seats.

There are so many sources of distraction this time of year. As a remedy to the madness, pull out the mistletoe and contemplate what Albert Einstein said: “Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves.” Happy and safe holidays!
