It’s a story that’s been told in theater and film for centuries, with everyone from Richard Chamberlain to Charlie Sheen to Mickey Mouse and Goofy taking the lead roles. Yes, Alexandre Dumas’ The Three Musketeers is one of the most classic adventure tales ever told. But this is a variation on the theme you haven’t seen before.

Hale Centre Theatre brought Tony Award-winning playwright Ken Ludwig’s (Lend Me a Tenor) adaptation of Treasure Island to its stage last year, and now offers the regional premiere of his new spin on Musketeers. It’s still the story of a young, 17th-century Frenchman named d’Artagnan, whose adventure-seeking journey to Paris finds him crossing paths with the celebrated musketeers of the king’s guard:

Aramis, Athos and Porthos. But Ludwig gives a more prominent role to the women in the story, including d’Artagnan’s sister, Sabine, and the villainess Countess de Winter. Two complete casts rotate performances in Hale Centre’s unique theater-in-the-round for a swashbuckling good time.
