The fact that the political romantic comedy Born Yesterday was first written and directed for the stage by Garson Kanin in 1946, adapted for film in 1950s and then later remade by Hollywood in 1993 starring Melanie Griffiths, John Goodman and Don Johnson proves that politics are always ripe for comedy.
Now in 2011, Hale Centre Theatre’s version sticks close to the original, and again feels perfectly contemporary. The play tells the story of a larger-than-life businessman’s move to Washington, D.C., to lobby a dirty senator about a few special-interest deals. When he realizes his girlfriend (Jennie Richardson, one of two actresses sharing the role in the double-cast production, is pictured) is a regular ditz, he hires a journalist to tutor her in the underhanded, wily ways of the political world. But instead, the journalist helps her to see the dirty shenanigans of her boyfriend and aids her in disrupting his plans to grease the politician’s palms.
