The live-theater offerings during the summer months tend to be pretty skimpy, so perhaps you normally wouldn’t be looking around for a uniquely thrilling viewing opportunity. You’ll just have to look toward Orem, and a local starring appearance by a four-time Tony Award winning actress.

Audra McDonald stars in Hale Center Theater’s special fundraiser production of 110 in the Shade, the 1963 musical adaptation by The Fantasticks composers Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt of N. Richard Nash’s play The Rainmaker. Reprising her Drama Desk Award-winning role from the 2007 Broadway revival, McDonald plays Lizzie, a spinster in the early-20th century American Southwest weighing the attentions of two potential suitors—one representing a sensible, ordinary life, the other representing possibilities. Tony Award nominee Will Swenson joins McDonald (both pictured) for a performance in the Hale Center’s 300-seat theater-in-the-round for the final weekend of a summer drama experience as hot as the title.

110 in the Shade @ Hale Center Theater Orem, 225 W. 400 North, Orem, 801-226- 8600, through July 10, $99-$149. HaleTheater.org
