For decades, it was simply a social/tacitly endorsed gambling activity for church basements. Now, it’s the stuff of catchy show tunes and a Utah premiere.
Premiered in California in 2001 before an off-Broadway run a couple of years later, the show by Ilene Reid, Michael Heitzman and David Holcenberg tells the story of a community bingo gathering on a particularly stormy night. Longtime pals Vern, Patsy and Honey are feeding their mutual obsession, but the arrival of an unfamiliar face forces them to confront a divisive event 15 years ago—especially when the weather won’t allow them to leave. Tunes like “Girls Night Out,” “Gentleman Caller” and “B4” may be stuck in your head for a while afterward.
Many productions of Bingo! in other cities have become audience-participation affairs, with distributed bingo cards so visitors can play along. Bring your own favorite stamper, and join the fun.
