Salt Lake City native and photographer Garrett Smith has traveled the world, searching for ... something. Sometimes, it’s a starkly beautiful landscape. Or, on a trip to Israel, he was inspired to capture all encompassing human elements.
A Beacon of Change exhibits 30 Israeli images that Smith gathered by waking at dawn or staying up late in this war-torn region. Israel is a historical center for three major world religions. That is a primary cause of the ongoing violence, yet Smith shows that it can also make people feel close, compassionate and compelled.
This exhibit, however, is not political or religious in nature. Even though depicting key historical religious sites, Smith conveys how seeing this historical landscape deeply moves its visitors.
“All the history and
blood ... I was so amazed. This was a remarkable experience,” Smith
says. His lush and vivid works may move something in you, too.
