This weekend, check out a pet adoption event and find yourself the perfect companion dog for summer hikes—or, if you’re not an outdoorsy person, a cat to lie on your lap and watch reality TV with. You can also help clean up a neighborhood park and, later, check out a fun run to aid research to cure psoriasis.

More Than a Summer Fling Pet Adoption Event
Friday-Sunday, June 22-24
Nothing beats an active summer with a loving, active animal at your side in the park or on a nice canyon trail. This weekend, Salt Lake County Animal Services and Best Friends Animal Society are holding a pet-adoption event with $5 cats and $50 dogs. All animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and ready to go home with you. Salt Lake County Animal Services, 511 W. 3900 South, 801-559-1100, June 22, 10:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m.; June 23, 9 a.m.- 5 p.m.; June 24, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., BestFriends.org/Utah

Cottonwood Park Improvement
Saturday, June 23
Give a little green back to the neighborhood—not money, that is, but just your time, effort, sweat and civic spirit to help improve a Salt Lake City park. Volunteers are asked to come help paint, weed, rake and do other work at Cottonwood Park, a favorite spot in the city for bicyclists and dog owners. Bring your own water, sunscreen and work clothes. Cottonwood Park, 1580 W. North Star Drive (300 North), June 23, 8:30-11:30 a.m., RSVP Savannah Wake, 801-535-6202, savannah.wake@slcgov.com

Walk to Cure Psoriasis
Saturday, June 23
Psoriasis is a complex skin disease that affects for life the individuals who contract it. The disease is one that still puzzles the scientific community, but for the support community, there’s nothing complicated about the need to get out, speak up and walk to raise awareness. The National Psoriasis Foundation in Utah is hosting a fundraiser walk through Sugar House Park on Saturday evening. Registration is free, with donations gladly accepted. Sugar House Park, 2100 S. 1300 East, 503-546-8397, June 23, 7-10 p.m., http://citywk.ly/MKLvpR
