Utah Valley University lecturer Ross Hagen discusses the use of ritualized masking within black metal music as a tactic designed to inoculate the genre against commodification as popular entertainment. Hagen explores ways in which black metal attempts to assert its authority and authenticity through visual aesthetics and musical idioms that connect it with the supernatural and the sublime.
