Faculty musicologist Catherine Mayes examines the influence of popular culture on classical music in 19th century Vienna. Mayes offers a case study of the marketplace’s influence on music, suggesting that stylistic changes in Viennese representations of Hungarian-Gypsy music can be attributed to changing fashions in social dance in the Habsburg capital at that time.
