The season of need is upon us, and there are lots of folks who need your help. This year, you can be a secret Santa for refugee children and families. After turkey day, check out the community coat exchange and help those in need stay warm. Later, if you’re no fan of Walmart, do some Black Friday protesting and help others make a more conscientious decision for their holiday shopping.

Light One Candle: Holiday Donation Drive for Refugee Families
Through Dec. 14
Make the holidays meaningful for refugee families who are new to Utah and, for that matter, new to the holidays and Utah winters. Take part in the International Rescue Committee’s Light One Candle donation drive, where you can sponsor one or more individuals in a refugee family and receive a wish list of gift items they would like. Volunteer opportunities are also available to sort and gift-wrap donated presents. International Rescue Committee, 221 S. 400 West, 801-328-1091, through Dec. 14, Rescue.org

Community Coat Exchange
Friday, Nov. 23
Share a little warmth in the community this year by joining the eighth-annual Community Coat Exchange. At the unique event, participants can drop off a coat that will go to the Crossroads-Urban Center’s Thrift Store to help keep low-income and homeless Utahns warm through the bone-chilling months ahead. Or, you can exchange a coat with another that’s there, or take a coat if you need it, no questions asked. Salt Lake City Main Library, 210 E. 400 South, 801-403-0121, Nov. 23, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., www.CoatExchange.org

Walk Out on Walmart
Friday, Nov. 23
Black Friday means deals so good some shoppers think they’re worth trampling over old ladies for. If you’d rather mark the holiday in protest of one of the most egregious corporate examples of worker exploitation, then come out to the Walk Out on Walmart event with the local Industrial Workers of the World and other activists to encourage shoppers to not forget the high cost of low, low prices. Walmart, 1300 S. 300 West, Nov. 23, 3:30 p.m.
