There’s no shortage of ideas in the heads of Utah’s creative theater artists. There is, unfortunately, a shortage of space to put those ideas before an audience. Thanks to the Salt Lake Acting Company, a few of those artists are finding a way to deal with that ongoing real-estate challenge of location, location, location.
Three different original works will make their Utah premiere at the first Fearless Fringe Festival, to be staged in SLAC’s main-floor Chapel Theater. On Friday and Saturday, SB Dance founder Stephen Brown will continue the comically theatrical exploration into yoga he began with Yoga: The Musical and Revenge of Yoga: The Musical in Yoga Confidential (pictured), which Brown describes as a “glorified monologue” filled with both high-brow and low-brow humor. Also on Friday and Saturday, University of Utah Actor Training Program graduate Sam Wessels presents sam i was, a “musical memoir” about Wessels’ experience after being diagnosed and treated for leukemia while still a student.
The program closes on Sunday with a staged reading of a new work by Utah playwright Julie Jensen. The Harvey Girls explores the lives of pioneer women who “civilized the West.” A discounted ticket will get you into all three shows for $24. Even in today’s market, that’s a bargain for real estate—and innovative art.
