Back in September 2007, when City Weekly interviewed director Richard Dutcher for a cover feature, he was editing a trailer for a supernatural thriller titled Evil Angel. Nearly three years and a whole lot of festival-circuit touring later, Utah audiences finally get a chance to see the movie. Such is the life of a truly independent filmmaker.

Evil Angel delivers a contemporary re-telling of the myth of Lilith, the rebellious first wife of Adam expelled from Eden. She’s still making mischief thousands of years later, and a detective named Carruthers (Ving Rhames) is the latest to try to stop this ancient force of destruction.

What happens when a filmmaker best known for faith-promoting drama (God’s Army) and gritty psychological realism (Falling) takes a shot at genre thrills and special effects, under the cinematography eye of the legendary Bill Butler (Jaws). Catch this one-night-only preview in advance of a planned fall theatrical release to find out.

Evil Angel @ Broadway Centre Cinemas, 111 E. 300 South, 801-321-0310, May 18, 7:30 p.m., $10. EvilAngelMovie.com
