Epic it may be, in the sense of heroic deeds on a grand scale—but it’s also as generic as its title, with human teenager Mary Katherine (Amanda Seyfried) finding herself shrunk to the size of the inch-tall Leafmen inhabiting the forest near the home of her scientist dad (Jason Sudeikis), even as that kingdom is threatened by a destructive force. Director Chris Wedge sends his camera swooping through meadows and treetops to deliver the obligatory 3-D ooh-aah factor, peppered with comic relief from a slug (Aziz Ansari) and snail (Chris O’Dowd). But Mary Katherine’s attempt to re-connect with her dad proves almost completely irrelevant to the battles, or the villain’s menacing plans. It’s all vague gestures at emotional depth and timid pseudo-environmentalism, pasted together with ersatz Ferngully into a tale that seems to exist only to employ graphic artists.
