Few things are as beautiful as a sense of empowerment. This week, come check out a fashion show put on by a local nonprofit supporting refugee women in Utah. For another event in honor of Utah Refugee Month, check out a panel of refugee youth discussing the challenges of settling in Utah. For those of you active in self-reliance and flipping a bird to the big-food industry, you won’t want to miss a class on making your own cheese, crackers and more.

Women of the World Fashion Show
Friday, June 8

This weekend, check out an elegant refugee fashion show at a fundraiser for Women of the World. The organization supports easing the transition for refugee women resettling in Utah, with English classes, job training and other important services. Be a good neighbor to these folks and come to the show. A $20 donation includes the show, dinner and the chance to bid on a silent auction for awesome prizes. Pierpont Place, 163 W. Pierpont Ave. (255 South), 801-648-9692, June 8, 6-9 p.m., WomenOfWorld.org

Faces & Voices of Refugee Youth
Tuesday, June 12

Growing up can often be a difficult transition, especially when you’re adjusting to a radically new home at the same time. Tuesday, refugee youth from around the world will discuss the challenges of adjusting to high school and college life in Utah. The event is free and open to the public. Salt Lake City Main Library, 210 E. 400 South, 801-524-8200, June 12, 7-9 p.m., SLCPL.org

Transition Salt Lake Re-Skilling Mini Workshops
Tuesday, June 12

Some protests are about waving signs and chanting slogans. Other protests can be as simple as learning the skills of self-reliance that can help people wean themselves off the wares of the big-food industry. This week, check out a skills class from community-driven group Transition Salt Lake, where you can learn to make flaxseed crackers, paneer cheese and kefir, a Middle Eastern dairy product. Donations to cover the cost of ingredients are encouraged. Wasatch Commons Co-Housing, 1411 S. Utah St. (1605 West), 801-518-3266, June 12, 7-9 p.m., TransitionSaltLake.org
