Dive of The Month: Duffy’s Tavern
Neighborhood bars are an interesting phenomenon in the City of Salt—they both exist and thrive in parts of town where no dance club would draw a crowd. This is quite a feat in a city notorious for not being easy to find some revelry. Duffy’s Tavern is a neighborhood bar most would consider a dive, but it’s chock-full of history, comfy booths and one lone guy going by the moniker “Hooter”—“like Sting or Prince,” he explains.

Duffy’s Tavern was established in September of 1978 by Curt Nelson, God rest his recently passed soul. His legacy lives on in the relaxed atmosphere of Duffy’s, a perfect place for enjoying a beer after a Bees game or a game of pool on Duffy’s lone table. Sundays are a treat for longtime patrons and those in the know, with super-cheap $2 Bloody Marys and custom omelets made to order from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The bar staff also makes custom Duffy’s drinks, including the O-Ang, a Tabasco-laced libation.

Drop by if you’re on Main and had your fill of Uncle Bart’s or The Spot, but are still hankering for a neighborhood bar experience. Duffy’s Tavern is located at 932 S. Main.

Dives & Drinks: Duffy’s “O-Ang”
Named after the Ang who concocted it at the tavern and the “O” in OJ, this warming drink is sure to kick-start a cool fall night. Try it at home or have a well-versed bartender like Johanna Kunz shake it up for you.

1 oz. orange juice
1 oz. mango vodka
%uFFFD oz. triple sec
Fresh lime juice
Dash of Tabasco sauce
Shake with ice and serve in a martini glass or a handy tumbler.
