The Mobil Five-Star experience at Stein Eriksen Lodge is sumptuous, from dining at Glitretind and drinks in the Troll Hallen Lounge to wine seminars and spa treatments. And then there are executive pastry chef Raymond Lammers’ award-winning desserts and house-made chocolates. Well, I’ll let you in on a little secret from CEO Russ Olsen: Right now, during the “shoulder” season between busy periods at Stein’s, you can book a Five-Star getaway for less than $100 per person (double occupancy). Think about it: You get the same Five Star (or AAA Five Diamond) treatment that you’d get at say The Beverly Hills Hotel; Ritz-Carlton in Washington, D.C.; Maui Four Seasons or St. Regis in New York City, and you can blow all the money you’ll save on airfare on a fabulous dinner at the Glitretind. Since last week’s review of Baxter’s American Restaurant was published, I returned to try out its Sunday brunch. Oh my. If my experience was any indication, Baxter’s, in very short time, should turn out to be the default downtown brunch destination, especially for lovers of eggs Benedict. Baxter’s serves six different versions: Swedish (with smoked salmon), California (oven-dried tomato, grilled shrimp, avocado salsa), French (with ratatouille and goat cheese), Florentine (spinach and smoked mozzarella), Maryland (with crab cakes) and, of course, the classic. In addition, there’s steak & eggs, a monster serving of biscuits, poached eggs and homemade sausage gravy, apple-cinnamon waffle, crème brulée French toast, and a Southwestern-style breakfast called The Ranchero. It’s a heaping portion of very tasty homemade chili Colorado (tender beef in red chili sauce) with avocado, sweet corn and black beans topped with two poached eggs.
