Good luck to anyone trying to synopsize this thing, which is less a movie than it is five(-ish) Despicable Me shorts pasted together in an attempt to reach feature length. First, Gru (Steve Carell) and new wife Lucy (Kristen Wiig) are fired from villain-fighting duty for their inability to stop ’80s-obsessed former child-star bad guy Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker). Then Gru discovers he has a Parent Trap-esque twin brother he never knew about. But also Lucy is trying to adapt to her new role as stepmom to the three girls. And also also little Agnes wants to catch a unicorn. And also also also the Minions are in prison, because seriously, life makes no sense any more. As usual, these movies move at a bouncy pace, with a couple of amusing sight gags, but literally nothing matters. There was a release date on the schedule, so every spare idea anyone at Illumination Entertainment had about these characters went into a bowl, and out came this brand deposit. As the Minions themselves might say, “[incomprehensible babble that is supposed to be amusing because an infantile yellow capsule is uttering it].”
