With less than 1 percent of the population having served in the armed forces, it is especially tough for the everyday American to know what it is like to doggedly fight on the front lines of this country’s wars.

Pulitzer-Prize winning Washington Post reporter David Finkel wanted to see the war from that viewpoint: the soldier’s. After months on the ground in Iraq during 2007 and 2008—in the middle of what has commonly been referred to as “the surge”—Finkel chronicled exactly what a 19-year-old goes through when he gets thrown into the middle of a last-ditch effort to save a losing war. Moreover, his resulting book, The Good Soldiers, documents that even though combat operations are largely wrapped in Iraq, with our troop levels now under 50,000, for many of these young soldiers, the war is far from over as they suffer serious, long-term repercussions such as post-traumatic stress disorder and irreversible, traumatic brain injuries.
