This week is filled with some primo activities, like the Utah Hempfest— tackling the stickiest of the sticky of political issues: drugs. If liberating hemp doesn’t stir you to action, try checking out Westminster College’s Sudan Community Empowerment Project. The project is a weeklong event seeking to bridge the divide between Utah and the impoverished nation of Sudan.

The Students for Sensible Drug Policy have put together a gathering at the University of Utah devoted to all things hemp and weedriffic. The day will feature literature on the cost of the War on Drugs (you know, that other conceptual war that came after the one on poverty and before the one on terrorism), the value of industrial hemp, and how mandatory drug minimums affect the courts and the legal system. All that, plus raffles, live music from DJs Drew Deroux and DJ Can’t Sleep, a live drum circle and food. Lots of food, I’m guessing.

Sudan Community Empowerment Project, The Two Dollar Challenge Fund-raiser

Closing the gap between the First World and the Third, apathy and action— student activists from Westminster College are hosting an array of events throughout April to raise awareness and funds to help support the construction of primary school in the war torn region of Duk Padiet, in southern Sudan. Events will spread through April and even into May (stay tuned to the Revolt for more details), but this week, the campus will be involved in fund-raising for the school. Kicking off the project on Monday at 7:30 p.m. is the opening reception with a photography exhibit and presentation by student activist Louis Gakumba, founder of the group “The World Is Naked” along with Chris Noble.
