Once again, the House Gallery pits the coasts against each other. This time, instead of abstractionists, it’s landscapes—in the form of the photographs of Los Angeles resident Anita Bunn, and the paintings and drawings of Tanja Kunz, from Westbrook, Maine, the opposite end of the contiguous United States.

Bunn’s photos take the natural environment around Los Angeles—by now almost as recognizable as the movie stars for which it has served as a backdrop—but she adds an otherworldly, almost supernatural quality to her images. Kunz creates works that are much more intimate but also recall other works, from the flowers of Monet to the blurred brushstrokes of Gerhard Richter, and thus they step outside themselves to make a commentary, if only suggested. The most remarkable thing about these two artists is the surprising energy of academic questioning Kunz engenders, and the majestic quietude Bunn instills.

Contemporary Landscapes: Anita Bunn and Tanja Kunz @ House Gallery, Peery Hotel basement, 110 W. Broadway, 801-910- 1736, June 4-26.
