Color Outside the Lines
Political mapmakers know that during summer months, people like to play and skip boring civic meetings. But don’t let the summer sun dissuade you from attending a critical Salt Lake County Redistricting Commission meeting. Later in the week, you can check out the official legislative redistricting committee. In between all the crazed cartography, you won’t want to miss a great donation drive to benefit refugee families in Utah.

Salt Lake County Redistricting Commission
Thursday, June 9

The Salt Lake County Council’s special citizen commission is still at the drawing board considering proposals to redraw political boundaries for the county council as well as area school districts. Show up and get involved, or get gerrymandered. Salt Lake County Government Center, 2001 S. State, Room N2003, 801-468-2939, June 9, 4-6 p.m., SLCO.Org

Spring Donation Drive
Saturday, June 11

Moving into a new place is never easy—especially when you don’t know the language, laws and customs of your new home. The International Rescue Committee is dedicated to easing the transition for international refugees settling into Utah and is asking donors to drop off gently used furniture, household items and cleaning supplies at the organization’s annual Spring Donation Drive. Be neighborly and help support Utah’s refugee families. Uptown Storage, 463 S. 600 West, 801-883-8457, June 11, 9 a.m.- 1 p.m., TheIRC.org

Redistricting Committee 2011
Wednesday, June 15

The Legislature’s Redistricting Committee will hold a public hearing in Salt Lake City. A key item of interest to Salt Lakers may be the newly proposed plan by Rep. Ken Sumsion, R-American Fork, that would chop the Democratic heart of Salt Lake County into quarters for the new congressional district. Should the new map keep an urban-rural mix, or disembowel Utah Democrats’ only political stronghold? Throw your opinion into the fray at this week’s meeting. Salt Lake City Main Library, 210 E. 400 South, 801-524-8200, June 15, 6 p.m., RedistrictUtah.com
