UNIVERSITY—The Utah Headliners chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (Utah SPJ) honored five writers for their work in Salt Lake City Weekly during the organization's annual banquet on Thursday.
Competing in Division A alongside the state's largest print media outlets, City Weekly earned a 1st Place in the General Feature category for Benjamin Wood's report, titled "Walking the Beat," about the Downtown Ambassador program.
City Weekly also earned a 2nd Place in the Health and Science category for Mary Dickson's "Ticking Clock," and two Third Place awards in the Personality Profile and Criminal Justice categories, for Bianca Dumas' "Singing Down the Slopes" and Carolyn Campbell's "Written in Bone," respectively.
In Division B, which City Weekly writers have the option to enter, Wes Long won 2nd Place for his opinion column, "Classroom of Commodities."
In a prepared statement, City Weekly publisher Pete Saltas noted the significance of multiple winners in multiple categories, as smaller weekly publications are constrained in the amount of content they can publish each year, with a a limited pool of eligible features to submit in competition.
"To place in 5 categories—especially the ones our writers placed in—says a lot about the quality of their work with the limitations we have, staff-wise, compared to the big guys," Saltas said. "As always, cheers to the little guy!"
