Chrony Profanity Feedback

Graduating editors of The Daily Utah Chronicle (one of whom is City Weekly copy editor Rachel Hanson) received threatening letters from University of Utah administration after using the drop-cap letters of nine columns to spell the words “penis” and “cunt” in their final edition [see “FailBlog posts cocky Chronicle’s success” and “Chronicle staff investigated for ‘PENIS’ gag,”, April 30 and May 6].

Super-astute online commenters p curley and S Mary wrote that California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, in an October 2009 note to the Legislature, wrote “fuck you” using the first letters of each line in the note. Then, unlike the nine Chrony editors, Schwarzenegger said it was just an (unbelievable) coincidence.

“They should be blacklisted,” wrote Wenalway of the graduating editors. That may seem over the top to many, but maybe not to El Paso–El Paso, who wrote, “The C word is the issue. The word is just as offensive as the N word.”

Many defended the prank, a decades-long tradition. “[Administrators] are overreacting. It’s a joke. Move on,” wrote m.chapmanm and several others.

An unintended—though not regretted—pun in City Weekly caught lynn’s eye. “Using the words ‘staff’ and ‘gag’ in the headline was a very classy move on the part of City Weekly. Did Hanson copy edit this story, too?”
