Chinese Cookbooks, Rachel Ray & Mother’s Day

While it’s not a comprehensive tome like many, one of the better Chinese cookbooks I’ve found is Cecilia Chiang’s recently published The Seventh Daughter: My Culinary Journey from Beijing to San Francisco, with a forward by Alice Waters. In the ’60s, Chiang single-handedly brought Chinese regional cooking to San Francisco. In The Seventh Daughter Chiang offers up 75 Chinese home-cooking recipes including knockout versions of Shandong asparagus, clams in black-bean sauce, and Ma Po tofu. Ten Speed Press, $35.

Rachel Ray countdown: Only 137 weeks left until (if God exists) Rachel Ray goes off the air. Her Food Network contract expires in 2011. Yum-o! You can also check out the brilliant video of Rachel saying “Mmmm” for 2 minutes and 46 seconds on the City Weekly Salt Blog.

Baxter’s American Restaurant in the Gateway is offering Mother’s Day brunch on Sunday featuring seven different eggs-Benedict options as well as other tempting brunch items and specialty cocktails. In addition, on May 10 Baxter’s will host a special Race for the Cure brunch from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., where 10 percent of all proceeds will be donated to the Utah Cancer Foundation. For more information and reservations, visit BaxtersAmerican.com online or phone 456-8999.

Blue Boar Inn & Restaurant in Midway is also offering Mother’s Day brunch, with seatings from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Forty bucks buys you a five-course brunch with a choice of entrée, which include smoked salmon Benedict with chive-hollandaise sauce, Mediterranean omelet with prosciutto and goat cheese, and herb-roasted prime rib with house made au jus. Reservations can be made by phoning 888-650-1400. For more information, visit TheBlueBoarInn.com online.
