Through Aug. 16, the Centennial Celebrations of the Cathedral of Madeleine continues with its week of solemnity with special sermons commemorating 100 years of education, arts and music in the growing Salt Lake community.

Services in the Cathedral will cover a range of topics, including the church’s involvement in outreach programs to the poor and lowly, the development of Mexican culture in Utah, as well as the exquisite writings and poetry of John Henry Cardinal Newman. On Thursday, the Cathedral Choir and Orchestra will perform Sir. Edward Elgar’s “The Dream of Gerontius” at 7:30 p.m. in the Cathedral. Composed during the time the Cathedral of the Madeleine was being constructed, this poem reflects on the transition from life to death through the thoughts and emotions of ordinary people. Everyone is invited to attend.
