A young adult novel about a teenage girl who falls for a dangerous, supernaturally powered guy? Nah, it’ll never work.

Salt Lake City author Bree Despain’s The Dark Divine is bound to inspire comparisons to the Twilight series, but she’s opted to take that successful formula in a different direction. Her protagonist, Grace Divine, is a Minnesota 17-year-old and minister’s daughter whose world is shaken by the return of Daniel—the troubled neighbor who was once her foster brother, but who disappeared two years before under mysterious and violent circumstances. And he’s got a secret … The nature of that secret isn’t exactly a spoiler, and it’s also not the focus of Despain’s story. Employing genre conventions, she crafts a “prodigal son” parable that explores spiritual questions of forgiveness and redemption. It’s also a lively read that could easily appeal to fans of a certain other young-adult series. Join the author for a reading this week.
