Do your kids’ have trouble prying their grimy hands off Guitar Hero or the Wii controller long enough to pick up a book? It’s even cliché now to say that kids have difficulty engaging in anything that doesn’t provide a continual assault on the senses. There’s one local author, however, who might be able to captivate their minds without electronic gadgetry.

Mythical creatures—fairies, nymphs, satyrs, centaurs, trolls, goblins, ogres, imps and demons—frolic in the creative genius of homegrown Utah boy Brandon Mull. A New York Times best-selling author of the children’s fantasy series Fablehaven, Mull will be speaking at the Provo Library as part of Teen Read Week. The focus of the week is “reading beyond reality.” Mull will discuss his passion for the fantasy genre and the craft of writing.

So if you’re tired of watching your kids’ brains fry on video games, hijack ‘em to the library where Mull will introduce them to the untapped power of their imaginations.

Brandon Mull @ Provo City Library Ballroom, 550 N. University Ave., 801-852-6650, Thursday, Oct. 22, 7 p.m.
