When a band makes the jump from weekend gigging to hitting the open road for their first extended, multi-state tour, it is a significant experience.---

Local blues/funk band Marinade is in the midst of their first two-week tour, which sees them as far east as Denver. A big venture like this is a make-it-or-break-it scenario for a band, in that they—in this case five members—can see how they jibe together, and, regardless, they have to pour their hearts out to new audiences, hopefully solidifying fans and future out-of-state gigs. For Marinade it seems like it’s smooth sailing so far.

Frontwoman and drummer Talia Keys writes from the road on July 17, 2011 with this diary entry, "Soak It Daily":

Here I sit in one of the captain’s chairs inside Bessie, our 2001 Dodge van, listening to "A Saucerful of Secrets" by Pink Floyd, reflecting on the past three days of our Colorado tour. So far, we have traveled about 800 miles of our 1663-mile tour. We have played four shows in three nights, filled up gas three times, eaten food we care not to remember and killed many bugs on our wind shield. More importantly, we did what we came to do: spread the soak, inspire some dancing, play spontaneous 20-minute-long jams, and get Marinade to become a household name in Colorado.

Durango is our home away from home—we love this place! They really know how to party and they really know how to support live music, too! We played The Summit the first night and, of course, had a blast. We woke up the next day and spent some time by the pool, and each of us got a new shade of red. We played a little rooftop patio bar called The Balcony from 6-10 p.m. It was awesome to play outside while the Colorado sun set behind the band. On our set break at 9 we found out the other band at The Summit cancelled and they needed a band to fill in. Seven hour show no repeats?...No problem! Needless to say, we are starving musicians on the road so every penny we can earn we will!

Yesterday we drove to Grand Junction and settled in at the house we stayed in (Thanks again Anna) and almost immediately set up and played another high energy three and a half hour show. During the middle of the second set a local harmonic God, Donny Morales, hopped up on stage and amped up our set even more than I thought possible. The sax versus harp jam is something we will never forget.

We will soon get on the road and head south to a mountain town called Creede to play the Tommy Knocker tavern tonight: another Sunday Funday, another night of funky jams and another night of new friends. We are stoked!
