There’s no real easy way to break The Awful Truth to you, so I’ll just say it straight: This is some beautiful indie folk.

The product of Brent Colbert, The Awful Truth landed in Salt Lake City a few years back by way of Idaho and Illinois and has graced stages as both a solo acoustic act and a full band -- with the likes of Sam Burton, Nick Neihart and Cathy Foy. Colbert, under the moniker The Awful Truth, has released one lo-fi record and is in the process of recording another, but he needs help.

So, the band launched a KickStarter campaign to fund the mastering and pressing of the 11 song record Birthright, recorded by Mike Sasich. And they are hoping this will coincide with a Northwest tour -- the band’s first -- in the fall.

The first song off of Birthright, “New Day” demonstrates the emotive power of thoughtful, sparse, folk music. It’s also obvious that Colbert like hikes at sunsets -- bonus points.

Here’s a sampling of the debut album, Object Impermenance, to get a slight taste of this indie-folk band. It's available as a free download.

The CD release show for Birthright will be August 4 at The Urban Lounge, with support from The Devil Whale.
