Open-mic host seeks burlesque dancers

If Brother Chunky's prayers were answered, the bi-monthly Big Variety Show would encompass more than musicians and the occasional comedian.---

The first variety show at The Deerhunter Pub in Spanish Fork was held on November 9, 2011. It’s open to anyone to perform “anything within the bounds of the law,” Brother Chunky says. The event is held every other Wednesday from 8 -11 p.m.; the next one will be April 25.

“Unfortunately, we’ve just ended up with musicians or comics, so we haven’t wound up with burlesque or anything,” says the frontman of the blues-funk Brother Chunky Band. He hosts the night and plays songs and tells jokes occasionally to stream the evening together, but says that the goal would be for him to not do either, thus keeping the stage free for others.

“It’s an opportunity for people to get some stage time with no judgement and no cost. The idea is that anybody that has some obscure or mainstream talent that they don’t normally have the opportunity to share can and will,” Brother Chunky says. He hopes for some more ecclectic acts, but thus far the craziest thing that has happened was when a kid ran into the kitchen to grab some spoons and then played along with Brother Chunky on a funky little jam --”and he was pretty darn good, too.”

There is a mic and occasionally a guitar amp, but otherwise, aspiring artists need to bring their own equipment and “their own hulahoops and pasties,” Brother Chunky says. “I’m not giving up on getting some burlesque dancers.”
