Bill White makes it affordable & The Slider

Cheap Eats: OK, so the economy has gone all to hell and you’re a bit weepy ’cause you can’t afford to eat in a Bill White restaurant (Grappa, Chimayo, Wahso, Windy Ridge, Ghidotti’s) anymore. Well, Billy is throwing out a lifeline. In what has to be one of the best restaurant bargains going, Ghidotti’s Classic Italian Restaurant in Park City is offering a takeout family dinner package for four people, priced at only $24.95 plus tax. For less than the cost of an entrée in many Park City restaurants, you get a choice of salad (house or traditional Caesar) and an entrée: classic lasagna; farfalle Alfredo with grilled chicken and spinach; baked spaghetti Bolognese with mozzarella (I’m here to testify that White’s Bolognese is bodacious); or vegetable farfalle with fresh basil and marinara sauce. Plus, you’ll take home an order of Windy Ridge Bakery’s freshly baked focaccia bread. That’s a deal hard to beat. To order, phone 435-658-0669 and pick up your family dinner at your convenience. Ghidotti’s is located at 6030 N. Market St. in Park City’s Redstone Center at Kimball Junction. Ghidottis.com

nWhere’s the slider? John, a food maven who regularly keeps me informed about culinary doings worldwide, recently e-mailed me asking, “OK, riddle me this: Why does not White Castle or Krystal invade Utah? These are bleak times and the nation needs a slider you can burp and re-taste two hours after you ate it.” Truer words were never spoken. There’s still a little aftertaste left from all the White Castle sliders I consumed back when I lived a block from a White Castle burger emporium in Queens. The good news, though, is that you can find frozen White Castle hamburgers and cheeseburgers at Smith’s, Albertsons, SuperTarget, Dan’s, Harmons and others. You just nuke ’em for a minute or so and they actually taste pretty darned good. Unfortunately, Krystal doesn’t seem to have made it west of San Antonio yet, and the White Castle empire ends Westerly at Minnesota and Missouri. WhiteCastle.com and Krystal.com
