Beautiful Game, Beautiful Story

Stephen Dark’s cover story on immigrants, soccer and the drive to play, is a well-researched, accurate and insightful piece of journalism [“Immigrant Goal,” July 28, City Weekly]. It tells the multilayered story of the positive impact soccer has on assimilating kids and adults into a community, and the universality of the sport.

Our son grew up playing soccer, and we made every effort to develop an international team, coordinating rides for kids all over the city, and offering support in many ways. We all benefitted from our larger-than-our-backyard community.

Dark captures the uncertainty and concerns of newcomers and reminds us that the international game, often called “the beautiful game,” is practically a religion to some because it creates community, service, support and hope.

I also appreciated the background on our professional, MLS, Real Salt Lake players. The compassion and passion for the sport, each other, and their fans is at the heart of their success.

Thanks to City Weekly for giving this story the space to reveal the far-reaching affects of soccer in Utah.
