Batters Up

Not just for sports nuts

I have to admit that I was surprised to find a dance party at a bar typically reserved for sports fans. “Man, it’s good to see people getting down to Tom Petty,” I thought to myself on a recent Saturday at Batters Up (1717 S. Main, 801-463-4996). Saturdays are hosted by request cultivator DJ Scott. I like this guy because he prefers to mix the old fashioned way: letting songs play all the way through while pausing between songs to compliment the ladies on the dance floor. This is a lost art form that’s usually resurrected only by the best wedding and strip-club DJs. But somehow, DJ Scott makes it work at a sports bar. I’m sure it helps that Batters Up offers $3 shots of Beam and $4 steins of domestic drafts. Also, check out karaoke night every Friday. (Photos by Nicole Jaatoul)
