Nathan Ruiz can take pride in his accomplishments [“Insult to Injury,” Nov. 5, City Weekly]. A 3.8 GPA is excellent. To be alive at all is a great achievement.
Many great people have had considerable problems. Beethoven was deaf.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was crippled. Toulouse-Lautrec suffered bone deformities. Helen Keller was deaf as well as blind. My own cousin is blind in one eye. I am nearly deaf.
Ruiz should take pride in his supportive family, continue his intellectual pursuits and find new friends. Those fair-weather friends of the past are no loss.
And perhaps he can take pride in those scars as a badge of distinction. Not everyone has such a unique set of distinguishing marks.
