You can start by dropping in on the Legislature’s Education Task Force, which will be meeting to discuss strategies for improving education access and standards. Later, you can check out a nonpartisan film screening of Overdraft, about the national deficit, and then join a bipartisan panel discussion afterward. Later, Sandy-ites won’t want to miss a city council meeting to discuss a proposal to open the city budget up to increase appropriations for various municipal expenses.
Education Task Force
Thursday, Sept. 26
After the release of the controversial school “grades,” principals from high-achieving schools will discuss the strategies they employ for helping at-risk students in their schools at the Legislature’s Education Task Force. Lawmakers will also hear from stakeholders about priorities for increasing student achievement, and GOP House Speaker Becky Lockhart will make a proposal for increasing career and college counseling for Utah high school students.

The Can Kicks Back
Monday, Sept. 30
As part of the national movement The Can Kicks Back, the documentary Overdraft will be shown at the University of Utah; students and the public are invited to come learn about the national deficit and how it will affect Republicans, Democrats and everyone in between for generations to come. After the screening, a panel, featuring State Democratic Party Chair Sen. Jim Dabakis, D-Salt Lake City, former State GOP Chair Thomas Wright and others, will discuss solutions.

Sandy City Budget Hearing
Tuesday, Oct. 1
Sandy City is holding a hearing to open up the budget again to draw out money for a variety of city services, including
the General Fund, Redevelopment Agency Fund and the Alta Canyon Recreation Center Fund. Show up and keep an eye on where your tax dollars might end up.
