This month, help local refugee children settle not just into a new school year but also a new community a world away from their homes by donating school supplies. This week, you also won’t want to miss a Utah Transportation Authority workshop on bus-route changes between Salt Lake and Utah counties. Later, learn some skills of self-reliance, from solar cooking to worm fertilizer, from the folks of Transition Salt Lake.

Back to School Donation Drive
Aug. 16-31

The International Rescue Committee is holding its annual donation drive and is looking for the community to help make the roughly 200 newly arrived refugee children in Salt Lake County feel welcome. The IRC is looking for gently used backpacks and pencils, crayons, pens, erasers, spiral notebooks, rulers and highlighters, and, for older children, calculators, index cards and three-ring binders. UTA Route Changes Hearing
Thursday, Aug. 16

With UTA looking to have the FrontRunner South commuter train up and running soon, the organization is holding public hearings about bus service—mostly express buses that run between Salt Lake and Utah County—that could be shelved. If you want to learn more or to give UTA an earful about the service changes, you won’t want to miss this meeting. South Jordan Library, 10673 S. Redwood Road, 801-227-8958, Aug. 16, 5-7 p.m., for hearing locations in Utah County visit RideUTA.com

Re-Skilling at Sugar House Farmers Market
Friday, Aug. 17

Sometimes doing it yourself is the best protest against a corporate-controlled society. This weekend, learn some skills for survival from Transition Salt Lake at the Sugar House Farmers Market. You can learn about seed starting in homemade pots, harnessing the sun to cook and bake your own food and even how to make your own fertilizer with a simple worm bin under the sink. Sugar House Park, 1300 E. 2100 South, Aug. 17, 4-8 p.m., TransitionSaltLake.org
