Avenues Bistro on Third 

New eatery from Avenues mainstay

Watch out, Sugar House. The Avenues may be the next “it” neighborhood in Salt Lake City, thanks to the entrepreneurship of Kathie Chadbourne, former co-owner of the much-loved Avenues Bakery. Most recently, Chadbourne has been involved with the 9th South Delicatessen, where she made a lasting alliance with Miguel Rivas, the head chef at her newest restaurant, Avenues Bistro on Third, slated to open soon.

Located on Third Avenue between H and I streets, Avenues Bistro on Third is a quaint storefront nestled next to a barbershop, just a block away from Two Creek Coffee House. The walls are painted in “Utah colors—burnt orange and silver sage,” and the open kitchen lends an intimate air to the place. The front of the house seats approximately 35 people, with six bar stools overlooking the kitchen, and there is a private tasting room downstairs that seats 12. Come springtime, the patio—which extends the length of the building—will be Salt Lake City’s newest brunch hotspot.

The eats? Tapas-style small plates, open-face sandwiches and brunch served all day—all made in-house. “I love organic, simple foods,” Chadbourne says. “We’ll have beautiful salads with rice, veggies and hard-boiled eggs.” With an espresso bar and full liquor license, Avenues Bistro also has an extensive drink menu ranging from Squatters beers to a variety of wines, some of which will be served in juice glasses.
Chadbourne stresses the laid-back dining quality of Avenues Bistro: “It’s very casual. This is a place where you can stop by for a cappuccino after a bike ride in the hills.”

For Chadbourne, this experience has been community-based from start to finish. Hundreds of people have expressed their interest and have even volunteered their time to help the new business take root. “We will cater to the people of the Aves,” she says. “Being in the Aves is like coming home for me.”
