On an outer, outer street in New York City, puppets ponder existential dilemmas, such as finding life’s purpose—or maybe first, a job. Imagine the Sesame Street cast, grown up, tackling issues like racism, suicide, lust and homosexuality.
At its core, Avenue Q is an homage to Jim Henson and that lovable street we grew up on; some of Q’s characters are parodies of the classics. But, this hilarious look at adulthood from the muse of our childhood is far from G-rated. With swearing and “full-puppet nudity”—bear witness to puppetry sexcapades—this musical is for mature audiences.
With its raucous, off-color humor and finely crafted musical score, Avenue Q has won a slew of Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Book for a Musical. On the other side of the spectrum, the song “The Internet Is for Porn” has become a YouTube classic. Broadway Across America lands again with another lovely, love-makin’ musical, destined to ruffle some feathers—or, at least, some puppet fur.
