A number of local artists have gone online lately, using the medium not to just display their work but also to engage viewers and other artists in a dialogue about art. ArtDuh.com—the brainchild of artist Todd Powelson and writer Anna West—commemorates the blog’s first anniversary with a show featuring many of the artists depicted and discussed on the site, taking place at a gallery that’s one of the most refreshing and vibrant new destinations in the local art scene: The Hive Gallery in Trolley Square.

The show is headlined by Powelson’s cubist paintings and marker drawings (“Angle Circumfrence Angel” is pictured) along with nationally noted artists Jesse Reno, Veronica De Jesus and Zach Medler. Portland artist Reno uses totemic symbols in the manic style of a performance artist. Powelson and West were moved by the childlike renderings of Big Gulps and cheeseburgers by De Jesus while visiting San Francisco two years ago; she also creates memorial drawings of dead celebrities like Gary Coleman and Bea Arthur. Medler, a ceramics artist from Indiana, is shipping pottery lino-printed with the Salt Lake City skyline for the show.

Local artists rounding out the sizeable group show include SLUG Magazine editor/photographer Angela Brown, Dave Borba, Colt Bowden, Portia Early, Teresa Flowers, Heidi Gress, Justin Wheatley and others. The 9- to 14-year-olds from Youth City’s Ottinger Hall will construct an art wall, and Craft Sabbath will also be offering its wares. The show should be a stunning convergence of local and national art in a site that’s drawing people to art like bees to honey.
