This week, you can hit the links for a very special cause—raising money to help law enforcement buy armor for their canine units. You can also drop in at the Legislature where a committee will be discussing how to implement President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act. Later, get a crash course on ALEC—the shadowy, corporate-driven organization that pushes legislation all across the country and is holding its annual meeting in Utah at the end of the month.

Golf 4K9s Benefit Tournament
Saturday, July 14

Since a 2011 bill allowed money to be donated for the canine armor fund, local law enforcement have been looking for help from the community to suit up these watchdogs of the public safety with protective vests. This weekend, you can do your part by taking part in the second-annual Golf 4K9s Benefit Tournament at the Midway Homestead Golf Course. Registration is $70 per player and includes a donation and greens fee. Homestead Resort & Golf Course, 700 N. Homestead Drive, 801-732-0156, Midway, July 14, 7 a.m.,

Health System Reform Taskforce
Wednesday, July 18

With the president’s health-care reform surviving a Supreme Court review, the program stands ready to be fully implemented. This week, drop by the Legislature where officials will discuss the health-care reform and how it will affect the health of the state. Utah State Capitol, 350 N. State, Room 30, House Building, 801-538-1032, July 18, 9 a.m.,

What is ALEC?
Wednesday, July 18

The American Legislative Exchange Council is holding its annual meeting in Salt Lake City from July 23 to July 28. The nonprofit has been considered by some to be a shadow government where corporations pimp bills to protect their interests with legislators across the country. To learn more about the group’s reach, including the companies and politicians in Utah who are part of the group, then you won’t want to miss this ALEC primer put on by Occupy SLC. Salt Lake City Main Library, 210 E. 400 South, July 18, 7-8:30 p.m.,
