It has been 15 years since Salt Lake Acting Company became one of the first regional theaters to produce Tony Kushner’s Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning epic drama Angels in America. A lot has changed since then in the way America views homosexuality and AIDS—and a lot hasn’t.

SLAC launches its 40th season with Millennium Approaches, the first part of Kusher’s sweeping 1980s-set tale that focuses on two couples: Louis and Prior, a gay couple affected by the AIDS crisis; and Joe and Harper Pitt, a Mormon couple destined to be affected by Joe’s closeted homosexuality. A terrific cast—including Charles “Sister Dottie” Frost as Roy Cohn—promises a take with its own unique flavor.

For those who need the sense of closure provided by the entire seven-hour experience, SLAC will also present a staged reading of Perestroika during the closing weekend of Millennium Approaches.

Angels in America: Millennium Approaches @ Salt Lake Acting Company, 168 W. 500 North, 801-363-7522, through Oct. 31, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday; 2 p.m. & 7 p.m. Sunday, $15-$41. Angels in America: Perestroika staged reading Nov. 5-7, 7:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday; 2 p.m Sunday matinee, $17. SaltLakeActingCompany.org
