In Allen Kurzweil’s popular children’s book Leon & the Champion Chip, a fifth-grade science teacher ignites the imagination of his students by conducting science experiments with that crispiest of salty treats, the potato chip. Now, not content to leave the science in the family to his celebrated cousin, Ray (The Singularity is Near), Allen Kurzweil is taking those experiments directly to young readers.

Potato Chip Science—served up in its own potato chip bag—presents 29 fun and fascinating projects designed for 8- to 12-year-olds. Much of the needed equipment is included in the bag, along with instructions on how to create a potato-powered sound system, or a chip-lid compass or balloon-powered chipmobile. Basic principles of experimentation combine with fun materials for a unique introduction to the joys of science.

This afternoon, Kurzweil will perform some of the experiments on-site and sign copies of the book. Of course, you’ll need to take it out of the bag for that and start digging into those tasty projects.
