Burt’s Jazzy Eggs
Occasionally, you’ll see Burt’s Tiki Lounge bartender Scotty Kerbien in the kitchen crafting his secret weapon: Scotty’s Famous Pickled Eggs. The fine finger food is a traditional German-family recipe that Kerbien has perfected with a time-tested formula. Club Matters found out the hard way that these suckers have a kick to them. One night, under the dim lights of Burt’s, a habanero was mistaken for an innocent banana pepper. The real-deal habenero, one of the hottest peppers, shares Scotty’s pickling jar with vinegar, salt, sugar, spices and, of course, eggs. You can also find this legendary “bar-food” delicacy at The Republican, X-Wife’s Place, and soon, Bar Deluxe.
Our egg-profiling adventure coincided with a local jazz performance at Burt’s. The bar has a reputation for being a punk/metal venue, but should get more credit for its Monday blues night and for booking acts like University of Utah student band The Big Blue Ox, who kept things fresh, funky and interesting for a mixed crowd.
