A Wining Weekend

Last year’s inaugural Park City Food and Wine Classic turned out to be a great success and a helluva lotta fun to boot. This weekend, for a second go-around, PCF&WC is back, bigger and (presumably) even better.

I’m especially excited about the new Grand Tasting at this year’s Park City Food and Wine Classic. That’s because this year, the Grand Tasting will have the look and feel of a wine tasting in a less buttoned-up state like Colorado, California or Idaho. On Friday, July 7, wine lovers will actually be allowed to stroll up and down Main Street in Park City’s Old Town as they sample wines from dozens of vintners. I’m told that the Grand Tasting Stroll of Park City will feature upwards of 300 wines, food from local restaurants and live jazz from the John Flanders Trio and the Pat Carnahan Duo. The Grand Tasting Stroll of Park City is $40 per person, Friday evening from 4-7 p.m.

Of course, education is the prime mover of any food and wine festival, and this one is no exception. The Canyons Resort will host a number of informative seminars, hosted by some of the world’s most knowledgeable winemakers. Of particular interest to anyone who got caught up in the Sideways Pinot Noir phenomena will be a Pinot Noir seminar on Friday afternoon featuring Laely Heron from Heron Wines and Green Truck Cellars’ Kent Fortner. The cost is $20. Australian wines will be the focus at a Saturday seminar ($20), featuring a discussion and tasting of Aussie wines led by Foster’s Wine Estates’ Sarah Waring. Following that, Colleen Lewis from King Estate Wines will guide attendees through the wine regions of Oregon, from Applegate Valley to the Willamette Valley ($20).

Throughout the weekend, a number of Park City and Salt Lake City restaurants will showcase superb wines and food in an assortment of vintners’ dinners. Among the options are a Wines of Napa dinner with Kent Fortner at Harry’s Sugar House; a dinner featuring Ted Egan and Bourassa Vineyards at Fiore; a Wines of Washington dinner at Hapa Grill with Mark LeMire; Grappa’s six-course Tour of Italy dinner; and dinners at Bangkok Thai on Main and Chez Betty. Prices for the vintners’ dinners range from $60 for food and wine to $150. In addition, a number of wine dinners will be held at private homes in Park City and Deer Valley, to benefit local nonprofit organizations. This year’s Park City Food and Wine Classic kicks off with a July 6 celebration at Deer Valley Resort’s Silver Lake Lodge featuring great wine, fantastic food and Deer Valley’s fabulous scenery, along with a live auction for charity and the sounds of the Wasatch Jazz Project Quartet. The kickoff party ($75) begins at 5 p.m. Then, on Saturday afternoon, The Canyons’ Forum is the place to be as it hosts The Toast of Park City beginning at 3 p.m. Attendees will be able to sample from some 300 different wines as well as enjoy food from a dozen of Park City’s best restaurants while listening to the Red Rock Hot Club jazz band. The cost is $50 per person.

If all of that isn’t enough, there is also a shotgun-start golf tournament on July 7 at 7:30 a.m., where you’ll be able to golf with experts from the world of wine while helping raise money for local nonprofit groups at the same time. What a weekend!
