A Tale of Winter

There’s an ocean of material to explore regarding the point at which it makes sense to “move on” from a lost love, and Eric Rohmer takes an intriguing voyage before bringing it to a perplexing halt in this 1992 feature previously unreleased in the U.S. It’s the story of Félicie (Charlotte Véry), whose summer fling with handsome Charles (Frédéric van den Driessche) leaves her pregnant yet with no way to find him after they part; five years later, single-mom Félicie’s other romantic relationships still leave her unfulfilled compared to Charles. Véry’s performance is appealingly ingenuous, giving Rohmer’s talky scenes a boost as she resists rational arguments by clinging to an almost religious faith in her long-ago true love. That metaphor carries through much of the film, but the resolution feels almost too pat in providing an answer to that faith. It’s unusual and perhaps even welcome to see a person who might be dismissed as flighty defended in her impulsive approach to life, but it’s hard to find this particular climax more than superficially satisfying.
